SONG REVIEW FRIDAY- 4/15/22

Well, these past few days have been very interesting to me, to say the least. Time to ring up my first single review collection and start off with...

"Afterlife"- Five Finger Death Punch (hard rock)

... sheer predictability. Everyone pretty much knows 5FDP at this point, so I'll spare you the details. It's the same tough guy machismo, fake anger hoopla we've come to expect from the band, so much that it's not fun to talk about anymore. So I'll leave it at that.

"junkie"- LØLØ (nu punk)

So, up until now, the only song that had LØLØ and I was familiar with was the Panic! At the Disco song "Ms. Jackson". So now she's made a move to Hopeless Records and is integrating herself into the new breed of pop punk. So with this song... it basically indulges in the "drugs as a metaphor for how toxic a relationship is" cliche and at this point, I'm tired of it. I also don't find her to be that charismatic of a vocalist to hold up this song. Overall, I don't see myself coming back to this one. Just saying.

"In the Mirror"- The Interrupters (ska punk)

I kinda feel like Ska doesn't get a whole lot of recognition these days. Maybe because most people don't associate it with any other time period than the 90s? I don't know. But The Interrupters put out a solid track here. A groovy bass line, well done harmonies, and a solid vocalist, it all makes for an entertaining listen. The only thing that drags it down a bit is the lyrical content, in which the narrator appears to be talking to an old love and tries to explain why they they keep running away from them. But they're VERY vague as to the exact reason and it leaves the song feeling slightly underwritten. But not a bad song. Check it out.

"Loveletting"- Vile Valo (indie rock)

Take my genre classification with a grain of salt, please. Okay, so Vile Valo is back! The former frontman of the Gothic Rock band HIM (the heartagram band, in case you didn't know) has released the lead single for his upcoming solo album and it's REALLY good. If you were/are a fan of HIM, this song feels like he's picking up right where they left off, from the lyricism that compares letting someone go to "bloodletting", a medical procedure that involves bleeding a person out to prevent or cure certain illnesses, to the synth laced rock aesthetic the band is known for, except with a bit more acoustic instrumentation in the verses. I can't recommend this enough.

"Masterpiece"- Motionless In White (Alt Metal)

A good riff, a sticky hook, superb production? This is radio ready! Another great song from Breaking Be- WAIT! I meant Motionless in White. Actually, yeah, let's talk about that. This is without a doubt, a Breaking Benjamin song, except Chris Motionless is singing. So either Burnley helped write or produce this OR the band really studied his Songwriting process. Either way, still a good song.

"Eventually"- State Champs (pop punk)

I'll keep this short and sweet. If you've heard one SC song, you've heard 'em all. If you like them, you'll like this. If not, this probably won't change your mind.

"Silent"- Tuxx (nu punk)

So how has this guy not gotten to the level of Lil Lotus or nothing.nowhere yet? All of that aside, this was a nice song with a relatable message about being forced to meet societal expectations. The production sounds great and it makes this song something I can come back to.

So that's the list! My Best of the Bunch is going to Vile Valo with Tuxx not too far behind. Worst of the Bunch will go to LØLØ, as I really just hate the cliché used. Dishonorable mention to 5FDP.

Anyway, see you guys soon!
